Hi,would a 98 honda civic Lx rev high/fast if the 02 sensor was Bad?

My boyfriend purchased a 98 honda civic lx.4 dr sedan and the check engine light came on while driving.we drove to auto zone.the guy put the tester on it.and it read it needed an 02 sensor.would an 02 sensor make the rpms rev high/fast when you accelirate?Please Help! T.y.
