Can a messed up car transmission cause the check engine to go on?

I have a 1998 honda accord lx and i was on the highway and my car just randomly felt like some stepped on the brake and then right after it felt like someone slammed on the gas. When that happened the check engine light came on. I took it to a transmission place( The car started stalling trying to shift gears) and they said the transmission is gone. Could this have cause my check engine light to come? If it is how could i reset the light? or should i get it check after i find a way to get the money to buy a transmission?
